Romania has ordered 12 Airbus H225M multi-mission helicopters through France’s arms procurement agency in a deal valued at approximately €757 million ($847 million). Funding will come through the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, with the package also covering initial logistical support and personnel training. The acquisition is intended to partially replace Romania’s aging IAR-330 Puma helicopter fleet, which supports both conventional military operations and special missions. The new H225Ms will be configured for ground-attack duties and designed to undertake attack, reconnaissance, surveillance, tactical protection and specialized airborne assault missions during daytime and nighttime operations. The helicopter purchase represents Romania’s second project approved under the European Commission’s SAFE program. The first involves 12 Thales Ground Master 200 MM/A air-surveillance radars under a contract worth approximately €247 million ($277 million). The GM200 MM/A belongs to Thales’ Ground Master radar family and uses 4D active electronically scanned array technology. It can detect and track drones, aircraft and missiles at ranges of up to 350 kilometers (217 miles). Thales will also establish a Radar Competence Centre to develop Romania’s long-term industrial capabilities and radar expertise. The first radar system is expected to be delivered in 2027.
